The Best US Cities for DevOps Jobs

For anyone who considers themselves a DevOps professional, now is a great time to be alive.  Companies worldwide are embracing DevOps as a methodology, and there are over 6,700 US DevOps jobs currently posted online, while just under 4,000 LinkedIn users have the word “DevOps” in their current job title.  That delta shows that there are basically 1.675 DevOps jobs for every DevOps professional (although this number is probably a bit lower, since not all DevOps practitioners identify themself with the word “DevOps”; many call themselves System Engineers, TechOps, Software Engineers, Ruby Developers, etc.)  For the sake of this post, I’m keeping things fairly simple.

If you’re a DevOps pro, you might be wondering which US cities have the most and least competition for jobs.  Check out the graph below, where I compare data from Indeed and Linked to show the talent/job supply/demand delta for nine locations:

DevOps Pros and Jobs

This data lets us make a couple of assumptions.  First, and not suprisingly, DevOps has been widely embraced in the Bay Area by both engineers and companies.

Second, there are a few cities that have far more DevOps jobs than talent, which leads me to believe competition to hire those people is fierce.  For example, in New York there are 513 jobs but only 336 potential candidates to fill them.  That’s 1.5 jobs for every 1 person, which means demand for talent is high and, among other things, may give candidates more bargaining power.

On the other end of the spectrum, in Los Angeles there are 173 DevOps professionals for only 80 jobs.  That is 2.1 candidates for every job.  This may mean competition for jobs is high, and employers have more candidate options and more bargaining power.  On the flip side, Los Angeles might be a good location for New York recruiters to source DevOps candidates from.

This research was highly unscientific and was conducted by searching for a somewhat generic term across two different sources (LinkedIn and Indeed), so take it with a grain of salt.

And of course, please be sure to check out the current DevOps jobs at Workday at http://bit.ly/wdaydevops.
