Reach passive talent through blog comments

With unemployment in the tech sector near zero, active candidates are hounded by dozens of recruiters as soon as their resume goes public.  While an active candidate sourcing strategy is imperative, passive candidate sourcing removes a lot of that recruiter competition, gives you more control over the process, and (some say) the talent is often better.

But how can we take sourcing beyond cold-calling and Google searches to beat our peers to the best passive candidates?  One simple method is to leave comments containing your jobs URL on blogs that are frequented by your target talent pool.

Here’s an example of how a simple blog comment can inject your jobs into the web browsing habits of passive candidates for free:

While I was helping the SQL Server group at Microsoft, a couple of articles about Oracle’s NoSQL offering popped up in my LinkedIn feed (and presumably the feed of thousands of software engineers).  Here are links to the articles

Oracle docs show plans for Hadoop, NoSQL  (GigaOM)

Oracle defies self with NoSQL database  (Wired)

I briefly read each article, then scrolled to the comments section.  Here are the comments I left:

First on GigaOM:

Then on Wired:

A quick look at the statistics from the link shows us that we received 97 clicks from Wired and 71 clicks from GigaOM.  The post on Wired received more clicks than the same link posted to several targeted LinkedIn groups.

Things to remember:

  1. This approach can easily be conducted daily across dozens of related blogs with some simple keyword monitoring.
  2. Don’t overdo it.  There’s a fine line between quality comments and spam.
  3. If people reply to your comment, reply back.  Social engagement at this level will boost your brand and is your first opportunity to provide a positive candidate experience.

Blog monitoring/commenting and reputation management are just a few of the services I provide.  If you want help incorporating these tactics into your recruiting efforts, let me know.
